To really take your game to the next level, you are going to need to find a coach that is able to take your current swing and enhance it (not one that is going to try to “re-invent” it). Obviously, you are doing something right in order to be in a position where you are trying to get your tour card. You want a coach that will build off of your strengths to help fix your weaknesses, not one who will force you to repeatedly work on and obsess about the things you are doing wrong, which can have some pretty bad consequences. I would really suggest finding a coach that stresses the importance of the mental aspect of the game in addition to the swing mechanics…you can have the perfect swing, but without a strong mental approach, getting a tour card will be nearly impossible. Also, a coach that has a professional background helps so he can share with you his experiences and methods of reaching the professional level.
Personally, I have never had an “official coach.” My father (a 20+ handicapper) has seen my swing since I was 3 years old…he knows what my swing looks like when I am hitting the ball good and bad, and we are able to make the small adjustments from there. This method has gotten me down to a 0.6 handicap as a senior in high school, and I will most likely play college golf.
