All you NEED to get started with golf is a couple of irons and a putter: You can quite happily play a par 3 course or ‘pitch-and-putt course with a seven iron, a sand wedge and a putter.
Sooner or later you’ll want to move to playing full courses and then you’ll need a full set of irons (usually no. 3-9 irons, pitching wedge and sand wedge), some fairway woods for long fairway shots or tee shots (3- and 5- woods are common), a driver (also called a 1-wood) for use off the tee, and of course your putter. You may also choose to replace some woods or ‘long irons’ like the 3-iron or 4-iron with hybrid clubs. These combine the features of Irons and woods and are designed to be easier to hit. some iron sets make this choice for you and include hybrids as standard.
Prices of putters vary widely, and price is no guide to putter quality, its all about how it feels to you, so you really have to try them.
Prices for a set of irons can range from less than £100 for a set of real cheapo irons (and the prices are generally indicative of quality to some extent) to mid range ‘budget’ clubs (maybe £200 for irons), then premium brand clubs (£300-£800 for a set of irons), and then the extravagant stuff which might be over £2000 a set.
Fairway woods can cost from about £50 (budget) each to £150, with hybrids (if not included in the set or irons) costing slightly less. Drivers are some of the most technologically advanced clubs, so they range from £100 (budget, but not bad) to £350 (for big brand names) on average.
